Art on the Island this bank holiday Monday

Something exciting is afoot for the bank holiday Monday! I seem to have inadvertently become part of an 'art collective' on the island where I live.

It has become apparent that creative people gravitate towards this gorgeous nature-filled place... and living on boats and barges! We have a sculptor, a potter and lamp creator, a jewellery designer and a walking stick maker. I'm not even kidding (we could have our own nursery rhyme)!!

And so 'April Art' the brain-child of Jill (the potter and lamp maker) and Ivo (the sculptor) has been born, and I am proud to be part of it. We shall be called 'April Art'!

The April Art showcase this coming bank holiday Monday (31st May 2021) - where our creations will be available to buy - will feature pieces from:

  • Ivo who creates remarkable life-sized and table-top sculptures entirely from recycled materials,

  • Jill who designs and makes one-of-a-kind pieces of pottery and beautiful lamps from natural materials found along the towpath where we live

  • Bernie who whittles and carves intricate walking sticks

  • and my upcycled pieces of jewellery made from found leaves, stones, seeds and broken pieces of glass

Sculptures including a painted toad-stool, face with hand, candle holder in female form, and a single horse and pair of horses made from horse shoesEvery single piece is unique, up/recycled and has its own story.
Wood work by Jill including several lamps made from knarled twigs and sticks and a deer made from wood shavings in the centre</em>

At the moment it looks like it will the four of us, but over the months to come I have the feeling we may add a few more artists to our ranks (we also have a tailor, a textiles specialist, more than a few cake-bakers, and several musicians in our midst). So watch this space.

If you would like to join us, we will be opening the gates into our secluded marina in a COVID-safe manner, from 10am-4pm on Monday 31st May and then the last Sunday of every month thereafter.

You can find us next to Southmill Lock which is opposite the Canoe Club and a short walk down the towpath along the River Stort.
